Black vs Red Mangroves

Sharing something I learnt on the trip to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. How the roots of the mangrove adapt to its environment.

--------------

Adaptations to Low Oxygen

black mangrove

Black mangroves live on higher ground and make many pneumatophores (specialised root-like structures which stick up out of the soil like straws for breathing) which are also covered in lenticels. These "breathing tubes" typically reach heights of up to thirty centimeters, and in some species, over three meters.

red mangrove

Red mangroves which can survive in the most inundated areas, prop themselves above the water level with stilt roots and can then absorb air through pores in their bark (lenticels).

And congratulations on getting praised by the park rangers for having gathered 28.8kg of litter and hence conserving the environment.

Note: P5B 2007 was to perform the same coastal clean-up but the CIP had to be cancelled because of an imminent downpour. What memories...

My Favourite Sports Quotes

Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.
-T. Alan Armstrong

Forget the risk and take the fall,
If it's what you want, then it's worth it all

Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them -- a desire, a dream, a vision.
-Muhammad Ali

If you aren't going all the way, why go at all?
-Joe Namath

You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.
- Michael Jordan

To succeed...You need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you.
- Tony Dorsett

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
- Vince Lombardi

Sports do not build character. They reveal it.
- Heywood Hale Broun

The Six W's: Work Will Win When Wishing Won't.
- Todd Blackledge

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
- Vince Lombardi

The principle is competing against yourself. It's about self-improvement, about being better than you were the day before.

What is Deforestation

Enjoy the information if not the music. And yes, if we don't do our part to conserve our environment, then indeed it would be 'too late to apologize' :)
