Ugandan surprises to win Olympic marathon | ajc.com
Ugandan surprises to win Olympic marathon | ajc.com
For Stephen Kiprotich, being a relative unknown had an advantage: When the Ugandan runner joined the leaders late in the Olympic marathon, no one really paid that much attention.
That was part of his plan — blend in and then take the competition by surprise
And also by winning gold, he made sure he won't be overlooked again.
He's an unknown no longer.
"They didn't expect me to win. I was keeping behind them, keeping the fire burning," he said. "When they (went), they thought they'd left me, but I was there. When my time came, I said, 'Now, I go.'"
And off he went, leaving many to wonder: Where did this runner come from?
"People didn't expect Uganda. They thought Kenya, Ethiopia," Kiprotich said. "I've been keeping quiet. Not now."
"It means a lot to me. Being unknown, now I'm known," he said. "So I'm happy. I'm happy now I'm a known athlete."

It wasn't the best reaction in the world but I executed it and that was the key. My coach said 'stop worrying about the start because the best part of your race is the end.' It worked. - Usain Bolt, Olympics 2012

Flight of Stairs Question
There were 2 identical flights of steps. Charles walked up the first flight of steps and ran up the last 8 steps. He took a total of 82 seconds to reach the top of the first flight of steps.
He then walked up the second flight of steps and ran up the last 15 steps. He took a total of 54 seconds to reach the top of the second flight of steps.
His walking speed of both flights of steps was also the same. If Charlie was to walk up all the steps, how much time would he take to reach the top of one flight of steps?
Flight 1: walk + run 8 = 82 seconds
Flight 2: walk (less 7 steps) + run 15 = 54 seconds
7 extra steps walked --> 28 extra seconds
1 extra step walked --> 4 extra seconds
Using Flight 1, convert the 8 steps from run to walk
8 steps converted to walk --> 8 x 4 extra seconds = 32 extra seconds
Flight 1: Walk + 8more walk --> 82 + 32 = 114 seconds
He then walked up the second flight of steps and ran up the last 15 steps. He took a total of 54 seconds to reach the top of the second flight of steps.

The world's longest waterslide!
to get a successful landing, the stuntman must consider his initial gravitational potential energy. How much that gravitational potential energy will convert to kinetic energy after consideration of energy required to overcome frictional force as well as his launch speed. (Recall that kinetic energy is dependent on speed of moving object).
Also the distance from edge of slide to his target and time he will remain airborne.
A wrong calculation will result in a tragedy. But the right one will result in pure awesomeness :)
So this is ONE reason why the topic of Distance, Speed, Time is very important :)

Elastic Spring Force - Compression vs Extension
x = 0 represents spring at rest ( when it is neither extended or compressed)
Fs is the direction of the elastic spring force of the spring
The top diagram shows that when a spring is extended (pulled), the spring will pull back (indicated by Fs going to the left)
The bottom diagram shows that when a spring is compressed (pushed), the spring will push back (indicated by Fs going to the right)
